Project: 10 Student Desks,
Status: Completed,
Projected Start Date: 2/11/2019,
Project Completion Date:4/9/2019,
Participating Members:
6 Teams (shop owner is listed first):
- C.J. Bergeron, Jim Landry, Arthur Hebert;
- Hays Town, Bill Delmar, Christine Delmar;
- Cody Henderson, Jeff Springer, David Miller;
- Cedric Broussard, Mike Lee, Keith Devall;
- George Campagna, Harold Choate, Wayne Matherne;
- Lee Owens, Frank Wharton
Teams 1 – 4 are to make two desks each; Teams 5 & 6 to make one desk each.
Design & Plan:
This desk is designed by Hays Town, and its plan is drawn up by Kesh Ikuma.
The desk measures 38″ wide by 22″ deep by 30″ tall, with 2 open cubbies and flip-up desktop. The sloped desktop is split into 2 panels, each of which acts as the lid to storage space below. The legs are built with solid wood while the panels are from plywood. Hardware includes piano hinges and a nut-n-bolt for the lid stays.
The plan was drawn in Autodesk Fusion 360, which is a 3D modeling software with rich features. The model and drawings are embedded below for your reference.
Club Supplied Materials: Piano hinges
Budget for Member Supplied Materials: $186/desk (3 sheets of ply for two desks and 4” red oak hardwood)
Build Notes:
The plan is to be generally followed, but feel free to make slight changes as you see fit. Material of construction is to be red oak plywood (available at Home Depot for about $56/sheet) and red oak wood. Red oak has been chosen because it stains evenly.
The only items I have purchased are the hinges and I will get them to you. As you buy other materials, please keep receipts; after you have purchased all materials, submit copies of the receipts to me for accounting purposes, I will forward them to Bob Chambers (President) for his approval, he will forward them to Brian Fitzgerald (Treasurer) to reimburse you.
The teams have some latitude on the use of ply or hardwood. Anywhere you use plywood where the cut end will show, that end must have an edge banding; it can be thin hardwood or iron edge banding. As to plywood thickness, I have only found ¾” and ¼” available (I did not do a very thorough search, however). Note that ¾” ply has both faces in red oak while ¼” has only one face in red oak.
Design questions should be addressed to Hays Town and Kesh Ikuma. Since these desks are all going to different places, there is no need to try for uniformity of appearance.
I hope that we can bring the completed desks to the April meeting and each team show what joinery, finish, etc was used, problems encountered and what was learned.
