Location: LSU Rural Life Museum,
Participant: George Campagna, Jack Carmena, Lee Owens, Keith Bryan, Brian Fitzgerald
Planned Activity:
Campers will be building a tote box as they did last year. I have cut all the parts except the handles and the sides. Schedule is as follows:
- 8:00 – 8:15 Arrival
- 8:15 – 9:30 1st Rotation
- 9:30 – 10:45 2nd Rotation
- 10:45 – 11:00 Refreshments
- 11:00 – 12:15 3rd Rotation
Each rotation will be about 8 campers. We will set up 3 stations.
Station 1 will be cutting the sides and the handle. The sides will be a single cut yielding two sides. The handle will be a single cut from 3/4 dowel stock, 15-7/8 inches long.
Station 2 will be drilling the ends for the dowel handle. I have two brace and bits to drill the ends. They will need to be clamped together and drilled at the same time. Mark the outsides of each end to ensure they line up for assembly.
Station 3 will assemble the kits with glue and nails. I suggest putting the handle in before glueing and nailing. A couple of clamps helps hold every thing together. After assembly, they will want to sign and date. The museum has a stamp if they would like to stamp it also.
Tools to bring:
Hammer, cordless drill, drill bits, hand saw, F-style clamps, wood screw clamps, 3/4″ and/or 7/8″ drill bit.
I’ve attached the tote we will be making for reference. Handle is 3/4″, not 1” as the drawing indicates.
See you Wednesday.
